Rui Miguel Barros de Sousa Magalhães

I have a degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Sciences and the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto. Later, I did a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Microbiology, and a Master's Degree in Food Science and Technology at the School of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University. I’ve completed my PhD in 2016 in Biotechnology - Microbiology and I have collaborated in the area of Teaching and Research at the same institution. During my professional experience, I apply advanced techniques in the investigation and characterization of various food-borne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Campylobacter. I have experience in the area of Microbiology ("classic"/molecular) where I’ve acquired specific training in conventional PCR and real-time PCR. I collaborated in the implementation of several molecular typing techniques among which macro-restriction analysis PFGE. Since 2005, I have been working on the collection of L. monocytogenes isolates from various sources (food, environmental and clinical), including isolation, identification, typing. Since November 2015 I have a position in CBQF of laboratory technician manager of molecular biology and cell culture platforms, where I’ve developed skills in the management and monitoring of consumable supplies, reagents, lab equipment and instruments; areas for which I have a great interest.
