Carla Marques Oliveira will talk about CBQF’s Fermentation Group on the 25th of February 2022 starting at 14:15.

Abstract
The Strain Design and Fermentation Lab is one of the three laboratories of the thematic CBQF research group “Fermentation Solutions”. It is formed by an interdisciplinary group of talented researchers, ranging from software engineers to fermentation specialists, focused on the development of software programs for designing efficient yeast producers of value-added biomolecules and optimization of fermentation processes.

This group is very experienced on fed-batch fermentations carried out in 2-L bioreactors, which reproduce industrial process conditions, and use sugarcane syrup as renewable feedstock, for the sustainable production of target biomolecules. These are high value terpenoids for the pharma, cosmetic, and food industries. This Lab aims at improving the performance of the designed strains, and the biomolecules productivity, by optimizing yeast genetics, process parameters and media composition. This includes the addition of ingredients into the fermentation with known properties and benefits towards specific yeast stresses, extracted from residues of the fermentation itself, and/or the downstream process, aiming at waste valorization, in the context of a circular economy.

Our current activities are aligned with Alchemy and Amyris Inc. US goals on fermentation projects. Overall, this talk will serve to introduce the Lab to the CBQF community.
