Aquaculture is the fastest growing food-producing sector, now accounting for more than 50% of the world's food fish, and to ensure sustainability, a holistic technology perspective for the sector is on the demand. There is a driving interest in the development of novel technologies, more compact and efficient, for the production of treated water that can be recycled/reused in the facilities.
In many regions of Europe, the effects of climate change are making the access to water more complicated, and the illegal use of water contribute to the depletion of water resources available for aquaculture. In general, expansion in most aquaculture sectors is offset by lack of space and water supplies, and concerns about waste outputs or other potential impacts. Future supply options and market sourcing decisions will be dominated by drivers associated with energy, carbon footprint, resource use and environment protection according to EU’s Blue Growth Strategy. To ensure sustainability, a holistic technology perspective for the sector is on the demand. Aquaculture related activities impact the ecosystems, being the high use of water and wastewater discharge drawbacks for the accomplishment of the purpose of environmental sustainability. There is a driving interest in the development of novel technologies, more compact and efficient, for the production of treated water that can be recycled/reused in the facilities.
This seminar aims at presenting the basics of the technological solutions, based on bacteria, microalgae and/or bivalves, proposed in the AquaVal project to obtain water for recycling and reuse in freshwater aquaculture farms from the treatment of their effluents.
