José Matias Alves, docente da FEP e investigador do CEDH, apresenta a comunicação “Equipas Educativas, modos de trabalho docente e sucesso escolar”, no Seminário Internacional “O ensino particular e cooperativo como alavanca do desenvolvimento humano e social. A escola do século XXI”. Esta iniciativa realiza-se no âmbito de um convénio entre as Associações de Escolas Particulares e Cooperativas de Portugal e de Angola, tendo lugar no dia 22 de outubro de 2019, em Luanda, Angola.

Sandra Martins Pereira e Pablo Hernández-Marrero, investigadores do Instituto de Bioética e do Centro de Estudos em Gestão (CEGE) da Universidade Católica, no Porto, participaram ativamente nas III Jornadas de Investigação da Associação Portuguesa de Cuidados Paliativos realizadas em setembro, em Beja, Portugal.
Sandra Martins Pereira, integrou a Comissão Científica das Jornadas e dinamizou um Workshop sobre “Como e onde publicar?”, no âmbito do qual partilhou a sua experiência como membro da direção editorial de revista Palliative Medicine (IF=4.956). Uma revista que tem o maior relevo internacional e o maior fator de impacto na área científica dos cuidados paliativos e de ciências e serviços de saúde (6 em 98). Sandra Martins Pereira também partilhou a sua experiência como editora convidada, revisora e autora de publicações científicas em várias revistas internacionais, indexadas, com revisão por pares, e com fator de impacto.
A investigadora do Instituto de Bioética foi também coautora e apresentadora de uma comunicação intitulada “Methods, instruments and themes from research on ethics and palliative care in intensive care units”.
Pablo Hernández-Marrero dinamizou Workshop sobre “Como e onde publicar?”
No âmbito destas Jornadas, Pablo Hernández-Marrero dinamizou um Workshop sobre “Como e onde publicar?”, onde partilhou a sua experiência como revisor e autor de publicações científicas em várias revistas internacionais, indexadas, com revisão por pares, e com fator de impacto.
Além deste workshop, o investigador integrou a sessão plenária dedicada à problemática das demências, tendo proferido uma apresentação intitulada “Ethical challenges in clinical dementia research in palliative care”. Esta apresentação resultou do trabalho realizado ao longo dos últimos três anos no Projeto ENSURE: “Enhancing the Informed Consent Process: Supported Decision-Making and Capacity Assessment in Clinical Dementia Research”, financiado pela Comissão Europeia no programa ERA-NET NEURON II Ethical, Legal, and Social Aspects (ELSA) of Neuroscience em conjunto com a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal (NEURON-II/0001/2015 – ENSURE).

Researchers from the Institute of Bioethics speak about Palliative Care
Sandra Martins Pereira and Pablo Hernández-Marrero, researchers from the Institute of Bioethics and of the Research Center in Management and Economics (CEGE), strongly participated in the “III Jornadas de Investigação da Associação Portuguesa de Cuidados Paliativos”, held in September, in Beja, Portugal.
During this research congress, Sandra Martins Pereira was the moderator of a Workshop about “Where and how to publish?” during which she shared her experience as Screening Editor and member of the Editorial Board of Palliative Medicine (IF=4.956). Palliative Medicine is the most relevant international scientific journal and with the highest impact factor in the fields of palliative care and Health Care Sciences & Services (6 out of 98). Sandra Martins Pereira also shared her experience as guest editor, reviewer and author of articles in international, indexed, peer reviewed journals with impact factor. Finally, Sandra Martins Pereira coauthored and presented the communication entitled “Methods, instruments and themes from research on ethics and palliative care in intensive care units”.
Pablo Hernández-Marrero moderated the Workshop about “How and where to publish?”
Pablo Hernández-Marrero was the moderator of a Workshop about “How and where to publish?”. During this workshop, among other activities, he shared his broad experience as a reviewer and author in several international scientific publications, indexed, peer reviewed and with impact factor.
Besides the workshop, Pablo Hernández-Marrero was the keynote speaker in the final plenary session on dementia. He presented the work entitled “Ethical challenges in clinical dementia research in palliative care”. This work resulted from the research conducted over the last three years within Project ENSURE: “Enhancing the Informed Consent Process: Supported Decision-Making and Capacity Assessment in Clinical Dementia Research”. How can we enable the valorisation of 100% of the wastes from fruit processing industries? The answer is on the project AgroGrIN Tech, carried out by scientists from the research center CBQF/ESB/UCP, which won the 2019 edition of the Born from Knowledge Ideas contest, in the category of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change. Promoted by the National Innovation Agency (ANI), this contest goal is to bring together the best business ideas "born from knowledge" - scientific and/or technological.
Débora Campos, along with the students Ana Vilas Boas, Ricardo Goméz-García and the PhDs Ezequiel Coscueta and Pedro Castro, coordinated by Manuela Pintado, are the scientists behind this innovative project, which offers a patented downstream process that allows the recovery of valuable compounds from wastes from fruit processing industries. For Débora Campos “this award gives high visibility to AgroGrIN Tech and increases our confidence in the commercial potential of this process”, adding, “this award will allow us to deepen our business skills by participating in the BfK Rise acceleration program”.
Everything started with the use of pineapple residues, and the result was the extraction of high added-value ingredients. This experience lead to the sustainable use of resources, helping to shift from a linear to a circular economy. This sustainable strategy helped to achieve “zero waste” in fruit processing industries, showing social involvement and responsibility. In addition, this technology also enables the inclusion in the food chain of natural and healthy ingredients, by helping consumers to make informed nutritional choices. The thing is that this process is also applicable to other fruits.
From the economic point of view, the incorporation of this technology reduces losses while increasing profit margins, generating new revenue streams and markets through the new ingredients. From an environmental point of view, the technology allows at least a 60% reduction in wastes, preventing pollution and the inefficient use of resources. Finally, the AgroGrIN Tech contributes to increase entrepreneurship and innovation in the food sector, serving as an example of a project of high economic potential generated in academia.
The winners of this award have access to a Science and Technology acceleration program (BfK Rise), which aims to transform the business potential of ideas into products. BfK Rise is a Science and Technology Acceleration Program for valuing Research & Development results and technologies originating in the National Scientific and Technological System with commercialization potential.

Born from Knowledge is promoted under the SIAC - Knowledge Transfer Initiative, co-funded by COMPETE 2020, through Portugal 2020 and the European Regional Development Fund. This competition aims to distinguish the business ideas coming from Portuguese Higher Education Institutions, encouraging and supporting the work developed by these Institutions.

O Centro Regional do Porto e o Instituto de Ciências da Saúde – Porto comunicam o falecimento do Senhor Professor Henrique Lecour.
Luisa Freitas dos Santos, alumna da Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica, recebeu a maior distinção que um engenheiro pode receber no Reino Unido: foi convidada para Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Com mais de 20 anos de experiência na área de desenvolvimento de fármacos, Luisa Freitas dos Santos já liderou oito grupos diferentes de I&D em cinco países e desenvolveu investigação multidisciplinar de elevado impacto tanto na GlaxoSmithKline – onde é vice-presidente global de R&D Clinical Supply Chain – como em todo o setor.
”A Escola Superior de Biotecnologia deu-me uma excelente preparação de base para o meu percurso profissional” testemunhou a agraciada, acrescentando que “a licenciatura proporcionou não só uma educação sólida nas disciplinas fundamentais de Engenharia, o que me permitiu continuar os estudos de Doutoramento em Engenharia Química no Imperial College em Londres, como também me deu o acesso a estágios em Portugal e na Holanda (Unilever R&D), aonde tive a oportunidade de um contacto direto com Investigação e Desenvolvimento no âmbito industrial”.

Alumni of the Faculty of Biotechnology named Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering
Luisa Freitas dos Santos, alumni of the Faculty of Biotechnology, was named Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. According with the website of the Royal Academy of Engineering “Luisa Freitas dos Santos is an industry-leading chemical engineer with over 23 years’ experience in pharmaceutical drug development including process chemistry, particle sciences, process engineering, analytical sciences, discovery and clinical supply chain. She has led eight different R&D groups in five countries delivering multidisciplinary research with high impact both within GSK and across the sector.”
”The Faculty of Biotechnology gave me an excellent academic education during my first degree which prepared me well for my future carreer. As licenciaturas de Som e Imagem e Conservação e Restauro da EA realizaram no passado dia 17 de Outubro uma visita de estudo ao MAAT - Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia, onde decorre a exposição Anima Vectorias, de Angela Bulloch, com curadoria de João Ribas e Inês Grosso. João Ribas é também, recorde-se, docente do Mestrado em Cinema da Escola das Artes.
Anima Vectorias, é a primeira grande exposição de Angela Bulloch num museu nacional, revelando aspetos da sua continuada investigação no campo da música experimental, escultura, computação e composição digital. Numa experiência emersiva e multissensorial, Bulloch recorre às novas tecnologias digitais e de modelação visual para criar trabalhos onde as distinções difusas entre físico, digital e virtual são problematizadas.
A exploração de vários campos artísticos que Angela Bulloch propõe vai justamente de encontro àquela que é a oferta formativa multidisciplinar proposta pela Licenciatura em Som e Imagem, feita em torno do desenvolvimento de aprendizagem teórica e de exploração tecnológica nas áreas de cinema, som e música, new media art ou animação.
Desde a sua inauguração em 2016, o MAAT tem-se posicionado no centro do debate, descoberta e pensamento crítico contemporâneo na intersecção de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia.
Foi recentemente publicado, com a coautoria de Maria Carmo Carvalho, docente da FEP, um artigo de opinião no Jornal Público Online intitulado "Carta aos psiconautas portugueses: presentes e futuros". O artigo tem por finalidade introduzir na sociedade portuguesa a discussão sobre o potencial terapêutico e de desenvolvimento pessoal, que é hoje cada vez mais reportado a respeito das substâncias psicadélicas. O artigo convida os/as leitores/as a conhecerem, a inquirirem e a tomarem posição sobre esta matéria.
