Nowadays, a massive quantity of byproducts is generated due to the fast-growing food processing industry. Many of these byproducts are rich in dietary, functional, and novel fibre sources with wide potential to be employed across the food, nutraceutical, and materials sectors. In this sense, understanding the potential role of the fibre of agrifood byproducts in reducing carbon footprint and fostering sustainable diets has become a goal line of the Bioactives and Bioproducts Research Group.

  • Rossella Laurano will present on February 23, 2024, at 5:30 pm, at the classroom EBI025, a lecture entitled "Harnessing multi-functional biomaterials to develop personalized chronic wound treatments and in vitro skin models as preclinical validation platforms".

    Rossella Laurano, Ph.D.

    Not-tenure Researcher
Politecnico di Torino, Department of Mechanical and  Aerospace Engineering
Corso Duca degli Abruzzi, 24 – Turin (Italy)

Graduated in Biomedical Engineering from the Polytechnic of Turin in 2014 with a Master’s thesis focused on the design of chitosan-based random and aligned nanofibrous membranes, with the aim to investigate the influence of substrate morphology on Schwann Cells adhesion and proliferation. After her Master’s Degree, Rossella worked in a startup company (Epinova Biotech srl, CEO Prof. F. Renò) as fellowship researcher focusing on thermoplastic scaffold fabrication through additive manufacturing technologies (Fused Deposition Modeling - FDM) for Tissue Engineering applications. In November 2016, Rossella moved back to Polytechnic of Turin, where, in July 2020, she obtained her Ph.D. in Bioengineering and Medical-Surgical Sciences (with honors) with a Ph.D. dissertation entitled “Stimuli-responsive poly(ether urethane) hydrogels for the design of smart patient-specific patches in skin wound treatment”. From August 2020 to December 2021, she worked as Post-Doc Researcher in the same institution in the framework of an Horizon 2020 project on the development of a bone tissue model as a preclinical evaluation tool under the supervision of Prof. G. Ciardelli. Since January 2022, she is a not-tenure researcher at Polytechnic of Turin.

Rossella’s research interests mainly focus on multi-functional biomaterial development, green functionalization procedures and biomaterial processing as bio-inks and mini-invasive delivery systems towards the engineering of patient-specific devices for wound healing and tissue-mimicking constructs as preclinical validation tools. This research activity has produced 17 research papers in international peer reviewed journals, 2 book chapters and 2 research awards from Gruppo Nazionale di Bioingegneria. In September 2022 Rossella was also awarded as Early Career Investigator-2022 from the International Society for Biofabrication in recognition for her contribution to the biofabrication field. She serves as Reviewer and Guest Editor for several international journals and as Topic Editor for Pharmaceutics and Materials journals. She has an H-index of 11 with around 380 citations (SCOPUS).

  • In the scope of the International Studies Programme, on February 28th, the Open Class of Arts, International Law and International Relations will be about "In between ideas of (dis)embodiment and opacity through technology, within the Palestinian contemporary cinema" with Guilherme Blanc, artistic director at the Batalha Centro de Cinema.

It will be discussed ways through which certain technological devices have been used over the past years, not only as a form of reflection on issues of deterritorialization, but also of counter-occupation. In parallel, being observed how certain filmic mechanisms are used in the conception of the ‘body’ in its distant relationship with an occupied territory, while examining possibilities of re-embodiment in a displaced context.

    Biography:
Guilherme Blanc is Artistic Director at the Batalha Centro de Cinema. Between 2018 and 2021, he worked as Head of Contemporary Art for the City Council in Porto, where he directed projects such as Galeria Municipal do Porto, Fórum do Futuro and funding programmes to contemporary art and cinema. Over time he has worked as an independent film curator, collaborating with institutions such as the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the Barbican Centre in London.
