  • The AQUAVAL Project aims to develop technological solutions for the treatment of water from freshwater aquaculture facilities. The technological solutions will be combined in order to obtain a complete treatment system to remove pollutants and to value effluents following the concept of circular economy. The water resulting from the treatment system must be of sufficient quality to be recycled / reused in the production plant or to be discharged into the natural waterways.

In addition to the economic benefits, a reduction of the environmental impact is expected, which will promote the social perception of aquaculture companies. The project involves three universities (Universidade Católica Portuguesa-UCP, University of Santiago de Compostela-USC, University of Torino-DVS) and an aquaculture company (Grupo TresMares-GTM).

The launching meeting of research projects funded under the Water JPI transnational tender took place in Stockholm (Sweden) on 6 April.

  • The Rocha pear sector deals with the challenge posed by the EU ban on the use of the antioxidant "diphenylamine" (DPA), without which the total conservation of stored pear is reduced to three months.
The project "ReStoragePear - Development of strategies to prevent superficial scalding and internal browning in Rocha pear and quality assurance in long-term storage" aims to respond to this clear market opportunity, ensuring fruit quality in long-term storage .

The research and development of this innovative project is being developed by a consortium made up of the Cooperativa Agrícola dos Fruticultores do Cadaval (COOPVAL), the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica Portuguesa (ESB-UCP) and the University of Aveiro (UA).

The ReStoragePear project was supported by COMPETE 2020 under the Incentive System for Research and Technological Development in the Co-promotion field, with an eligible investment of 572,000 euros, which resulted in an ERDF incentive of 404,000 euros.
