Implications of the COVID-19 pandemic to Problematic Drug Use and Harm Reduction

This is a qualitative study based in:

• Desk research to have an overview of the current data and literature related with the health and social impacts of covid-19 pandemic among people who use drugs (PWUD), and new innovations in the field of harm reduction implemented to respond to the new challenges imposed by the new virus.
• Semi-structured interviews targeting an intentional sample composed of PWUD (n=20) in the cities of Porto and Lisbon. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed through qualitative data analysis software Nvivo11 using the principles of thematic analysis (Brown & Clarke, 2006).  
• A focus group with harm reduction professionals and experts (n=6) that were involved in the implementation of outreach responses targeting PWUD during the lockdown and post-lockdown periods, at Porto and Lisbon.

Este é um estudo qualitativo baseado em:

• Pesquisa bibliográfica sobre os impactos da covid-19 ao nível da saúde e estio de vida das pessoas que consomem drogas, e respostas inovadoras de redução de riscos que foram implementadas para responder aos desafios impostos pela pandemia.
• Entrevistas semiestruturadas recolhidas junto de pessoas que consomem drogas (n=20) no Porto e em Lisboa. As entrevistas serão transcritas e analisadas através do software Nvivo 11 usando os princípios de análise temática (Brown & Clarke, 2006).  
• Um grupo de discussão com especialista e profissionais da área da redução de riscos (n=6) que estiveram envolvidos/as na implementação de respostas de proximidade, no Porto e em Lisboa, durante as fases de confinamento e pós-confinamento.
