Artistic Residencies

 

Since 2019 the School of Arts had one annual residency supported by the Inresidenceporto program.

Inresidenceporto is a platform which promotes art residency spaces and projects based in Porto.

Organized by the City Hall of Porto, Inresidenceporto aims to bridge national and international artists with the opportunities and resources which can be found in Porto to develop residency projects across different art forms.

Past residents

Alice Miceli
June 2021 - July 2021

Alice Miceli's work (Rio de Janeiro, 1980) alternates between video and photography, frequently starting from the investigation of historical events and exploratory journeys, through which she reconstructs cultural and physical traces of past traumas inflicted on social and natural landscapes. Her work is part of important international collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (USA) and Moscow Biennale Art Foundation (Russia).

Ben Russell
September 2020 - December 2020

Ben Russell (Massachusetts, 1976) is an artist, curator and filmmaker whose work is at the intersection of ethnography and psychedelicism.
 
His films and installations emerge from a permanent dialogue with the history and semiotics of the documentary image, in a reexamination of the codes and the immersive and mimetic potential of the cinematographic apparatus, which encompasses a wide temporal and geographic research around ritual practice and altered states of consciousness, while evoking the works of authors such as Jean Rouch, Maya Deren or Michael Snow.

Ana Vaz
April - June 2019

Ana Vaz is an artist and filmmaker whose films, installations and performances speculate upon the relationships between myth and history, self and other through a cosmology of references and perspectives. Assemblages of found and shot materials, her films combine ethnography    speculation in exploring the f(r)ictions imprinted upon cultivated and savage environments. A graduate from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Le Fresnoy, Ana was also a member of the SPEAP (School of Political Arts), a project directed by Bruno Latour. Recent screenings of her work include the NYFF, TIFF, Courtisane, Cinéma du Réel (Grand Prix) and specific focuses dedicated to her work at the Flaherty Seminar (USA) and Doc's Kingdom (Portugal). Her work has featured in major group shows such as the Moscow Biennial of Young Art and the Dhaka Art Summit. In 2015, she received the Kazuko Trust Award presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center in recognition of artistic excellence and innovation in her moving-image work.

 

 

 

 

Nuno da Luz
October - December 2018

For his residency, Nuno da Luz researched the surrounding of the School of Arts. He was interested in investigating the maritime specificities of the Foz do Douro (where the Douro river comes to meet the ocean). After practicing a critical and attentive observation, he collected that sounds and data of the waves movement from the Instituto Hidrográfico. He later was able to recreate this environment in an immersive sound and light installation.

Nuno da Luz (Lisbon, 1984) lives and works in Berlin. Artist and publisher, his work circumscribes both aural and visual in the form of events, installations and printed matter; the latter mostly distributed through the publisher atlas Projectos (run together with artists André Romão and Gonçalo Sena) and the record label Palmario Recordings (run together with the artist Joana Escoval). He recently completed the Master Program of Experimentation in Art and Politics speap at Sciences Po, Paris, and founded coyote, a cross-cutting collective working on print, film, lectures and other experimental forms (together with artists Tristan Bera and Ana Vaz, journalist Elida Høeg and editor Clémence Seurat).
