Biotalk - Circular economy meets lipidomics

25.03.2022 14:15

Luís Miguel Alcalá will talk about his research on the 25th of March 2022 starting at 14:15.
No need to register - just click here.

Abstract

The current landscape of environmental problems (climate change and resource scarcity) calls for optimisation of existing processes and careful planning of new ones under development. These actions share common points such as the reduction of energy consumption or any waste and generally more environmentally friendly processes. One of the strategies that can be implemented most quickly is precisely the reuse of any materials generated during industrial production. This idea is based on the fact that by-products still contain valuable molecules and, if provided that the recovery processes are energetically and economically viable, they represent a great opportunity in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals sectors. All this becomes especially relevant in those processes where synthetic biology is involved, since in this case we are talking about biomolecules.

The Biomolecule Innovation Lab is one of the three laboratories of the CBQF thematic research group "Fermentation Solutions". Research activities focus on understanding and unleashing the potential of different sustainable biomolecules produced by fermentative processes, with the aim of creating new products and business opportunities in the fields of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, nutrition and biomedicine. Dedicated to a multidisciplinary approach, the team members have extensive experience in the fields of molecular biology, in vitro models, microbiology, biochemistry and in the most recent branch of omics sciences, lipidomics.

The study of lipids and their role in biological processes has witnessed a radical shift in the way we understand these compounds: from molecules for biochemical energy storage, we have come to realize their relationship in cellular processes where they have functions on the same level as proteins. This has led to an exponential increase in the search for new sources of lipids with bioactive and functional capacity over the last 25 years thanks to the recent advances in analytics and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

OBJECTIVES | PROGRAMME

Dear Colleagues & Partners,

The Faculty of Education and Psychology (FEP) at Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto (Portugal) opens the doors to you and your colleagues to join us for the annual FEP International Week. In 2022, our international week will take place from 28th March to 1st April, and our motto for this year is “Thriving Global Academic Cultures”.

Internationalization reaches the heart of the FEP agenda and is present in every component of its activities, from teaching and research to social responsibility, enrolling students, staff, and faculties. We believe the commitment to integrate an international and intercultural mindset goes beyond the boundaries of our campuses and has the potential to mutually benefit all stakeholders and partner institutions to empower them to act in an interconnected global community. However, internationalization is plenty of challenges and complexities that require specific agreements, interrelatedness (dependencies) of intended, appropriate strategic practices, and commitment at all relevant levels.

The reaction to the global pandemic crisis provides us with both opportunities and challenges like none before. But now it is time to focus again on meeting face-to-face and discuss how our institutions can collaborate in:

  • International curriculum development;
  • Development of new academic consortiums, networking, bilateral and multilateral activities;
  • Teaching and learning innovation processes;
  • Teaching and research collaborations;
  • student-faculty-staff exchanges and capacitation;
  • support services;
  • & much more.

For this, your presence and contribution are essential.

OBJECTIVES

Talk: “Enhancing Learning and Teaching in Universities through a Practice Lens” with Professor Paul Trowler

31.03.2022 14:30
Edifício Central / Central Building

In the scope of the Faculty of Education and Psychology International Week, Professor Paul Trowler, from Lancaster University and director of the PhD programme in Higher Education Research, Evaluation and Enhancement, will give a talk on “Enhancing Learning and Teaching in Universities through a Practice Lens.” The event will take place on March 31th, at 2:30pm at the Carvalho Guerra Auditorium, at Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

Keynote Abstract
Enhancing learning and teaching in higher education across a single institution and especially across a national system is not straightforward. Often it is attempted with only-implicit and simplistic theories of change processes. While understandings of teaching and learning processes are usually better-developed, attempts to enhance those processes require stronger understandings of the forces which constrain and scaffold change.

In this talk Paul argues that a social practice lens offers those interested in teaching and learning enhancement an illuminating way of seeing current practices in their context, as well as contextually-sensitive approaches to enhancing them.

Social practices evolve as teams work on a common project over time. Meanings, emotions, discourses, and identities are shaped and reshaped as they work together. Conflicts as well as commonalities develop. The context of their practices becomes unique as they develop their specific practice repertoires in this way. But in this development they draw on ideational reservoirs that are common across many contexts, in particular educational ideologies and taken-for-granted assumptions. Agency and structure are thus both at work.

So, the practice lens looks at the repertoires and reservoirs in the location of interest. And a practice approach to enhancement focuses specifically on the practices already in place, on the imagined new practices and on any artefacts, tools, technologies that are or will be employed in that change. It makes a series of propositions about how to effect enhancement, and what is, and what is not likely to happen in that process. Paul’s talk elaborates on this.
