Summary
Currently valuable complex biomolecules are produced through fermentation making use of genetically engineered microbial strains. Although industrial biotechnology contributes for sustainable development, reducing the requirement for extractive and capturing industries, to close the sustainability loop in bioproduction and establish a circular bioeconomy it is essential to define valorisation strategies for the residues generated in these processes. Spent yeast is the second major by-product derived from fermentation and assessing the extent of compositional variation among different spent yeast residues is a primary step towards the development of efficient valorisations strategies. To date we have characterized several of these spent yeast residues and the composition of a selection of strains will be presented to show the importance of such characterization efforts to support decision making towards the development of the best valorisation strategies for such waste streams.
