Biotalk: The role of citizens and consumers in promoting legumes

28.05.2021 14:15

Legumes are being the target of recent scientific and innovation activities across Europe that enable legumes as dietary vehicles to improve consumer health. Specific initiatives include, for example: 1. the comprehensive nutritional characterization of large germplasm collections; 2. the understanding of the nutritional value of conventionally grown vs. organically grown legumes; 3. the optimization of processing techniques that enable full grain valorisation; 4. the development of legume based foods tailored to children and grown-ups alike; 5. the development of freely available legume-based recipe books. Still, in order for legumes to become more widely present in agricultural fields and consumers plates, and ultimately to “empower” legumes, citizens must be involved in “spreading the bean”. Fully decentralised approaches to legume conservation are needed, and one way to accomplish this is by involving citizens in legume germplasm conservation and multiplication. Citizen Scientist strategies are valuable tools to increase citizens´ awareness towards the importance of biodiversity, and create a strong bridge between germplasm banks, consumers and other stakeholders, including school gardens‘, to educate children on biodiversity by active participation in seed conservation. A dedicated app to engage citizens in sharing a collection of 1000 beans has been developed with the project H2020 INCREASE. The collection of phenotypic data (e.g., morphological, yield components, growth, and even taste) by citizens is creating a community of shared experiences, where legume pictures and stories are increasing legumes´ public visibility across Europe.

CBQF 30 Years Anniversary Seminar 4: The role of advanced biofuels in global energy transition

27.05.2021 17:00

In the scope of CBQF celebration of its 30 years is organizing a Cycle of Seminars about several topics related with the different areas of research. The 4th Seminar titled “The role of advanced biofuels in global energy transition”, will be held on May 27th at 5:00pm.

Brief Abstract

Advanced biofuels, produced with agricultural residues - sugar cane, wheat, rice, corn and other biomasses can have a relevant role in supporting energy transition. With this technology it is possible to increase biofuels production using the same land. This means that countries with land use limitations could use their agricultural residues to produce biofuels resting assured they wouldn’t be enhancing deforestation or other harming consequences.

It is clear that we need renewable and sustainable solutions to power our global energy matrix. Countries, states, cities and companies have set up goals and committed to overcome this challenge.
Biomass and biofuels have all the attributes to power this transition. As flexible as hydrocarbons they share a common ancestral with fossil fuels (yes, today’s oil was yesterday’s forest) and almost everything manufactured using oil could in theory be produced using sugar (or biomass).

Short biography

My job is to develop businesses and products in renewable energy, supporting energy transition while creating low carbon solutions for our clients.

I’m CEO of Raízen Biomass and Board Member of Raízen’s Renewable business companies –  Iogen Energy Corporation and Raízen Geo Biogas S.A. I also act as Vice-Chairman of ABBI (Brazilian Association of Bio innovation) and a Board member of ABiogás (Brazilian Biogas Association).

Our renewable business portfolio includes: cogeneration of electricity using sugarcane residues (we have 1GW of installed capacity and generate around 2.6TWh of energy early); a pioneer biogas project using vinasse and filter cake to produce biomethane and electricity (with 21MW installed capacity is one of the largest biogas plants in the world); advanced biofuels projects – using bagasse and sugarcane straw to produce second generation ethanol and biochemicals (Raízen has one of the only plants in the world currently operating at commercial scale - capacity of 40MML ethanol per year); and production of biomass pellets using sugarcane residues used as a coal substitute in industrial burners. In my previous role, I was responsible for creating an innovation area for Raízen as Head of Raízen Ventures.

My background is in law, and prior to my career transition I was Legal Director, Head of Corporate and M&A of Raízen. During this period, I designed and implemented Raízen’s Compliance Program, and lead several national and international M&A deals and capital market projects. My team was awarded best M&A team in Latin America by the International Law Office (ILO).

I graduated in law from UFF in Rio and started my career at Shell Brazil in the legal corporate area in 2003. I’m passionate about energy transition and migration to a low carbon circular economy. My ambition is to support this transition, while making the world a better place for generations to come.

Sensing tools: From handheld to large scale. STARGATE first workshop

18.05.2021 09:00 — 19.05.2021 18:00

In the framework of the STARGATE project, we are pleased to announce a two-day scientific workshop to be held online on the 18th and 19th of May 2021.

This 2-day online workshop will have two-morning sessions with teaching, targeting Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs), including Ph.D. students and young postdocs. Plus, there will be a live tour in the new phenotyping centre of Wageningen University & Research.

About the session
The workshop starts with a general presentation of the STARGATE project followed by a session on basic image capture and basic phenotyping using UAVs. This part will be directed mainly at ESRs of the participating institutions, but also open to the general public.

This two-day scientific workshop will also include training on competencies needed for the implementation of sensor technologies systems in as well affordable small scale and high-tech large-scale settings, on the use of robotics and automation to collect phenotypic data in controlled conditioned such as climate rooms and greenhouses, plus on for large scale screening using drones and unmanned vehicles on the experimental field.

Data collected with these sensors need to be organised, and one of the project partners, INRAE, will present their data management platform PHIS concept and explain the requirements to link to environmental sensor data to characterise in which conditions the plants were grown.

The workshop will be as interactive as possible within the constraints of an online environment. The afternoon sessions will mainly consist of homework assignments, Q&A sessions, and an interactive tour through the NPEC facilities.

For more information about this Workshop please contact: stargate@porto.ucp.pt.
