Internal Market Seminar: The End of Negative Market Integration: 60 Years of Free Movement of Goods Litigation (1961-2020)

07.12.2021 18:00

This year EU Internal Market's Seminar will focus on the topic of Jan Zglinski’s paper: "The End of Negative Market Integration: 60 Years of Free Movement of Goods Litigation (1961-2020)."

The free movement of goods is widely believed to be a prime example of the negative integration paradigm. Its defining characteristic is a strong judicial process, fuelled by – and fuelling – litigation, which eclipses the weak(er) political process. In this article, it is argued that this dominant narrative is no longer accurate.

Based on a new dataset of all Article 34 TFEU cases decided by the CJEU between 1961 and 2020, it will be shown that goods litigation has been disappearing from the Court’s docket since the mid-1980s.

The reasons for this, it will be argued, lie in changing incentive structures for both litigants and national courts, which have reduced the appeal of bringing goods cases, as well as a rise in EU legislation. The consequence is a demise of negative and a turn towards positive integration.

Silk sericin-based hydrogel: a novel biomaterial for wound healing

Resumo

In situ cross-linked hydrogels have the advantage of effectively fulfilling the wound in its shape and depth for proper clinical use. Amongst the new generation of natural-based biopolymers being proposed for wound care and skin regeneration, silk sericin is particularly interesting due to its exceptional properties (i.e. biocompatibility, biodegradability, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant), being also a textile industry by-product and an environment contaminant. Hereupon, a novel in situ enzyme-mediated cross-linked hydrogel composed of silk sericin was performed via horseradish peroxidase, in a simple, fast, and practical in situ forming approach to produce a biomaterial able to be applied in low exudative chronic wounds. The achievements in a diabetic wound healing animal model granted its protection effect against oxidative stress, while controlling inflammation, promoting healing and fast tissue regeneration.

Computational microbiology – from extreme environments to biotechnology

09.11.2021 17:30

A talk by Lukasz Dziewit, Professor at the University of Warsaw (Department of Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology), Poland.

The development of sequencing technologies resulted in a tremendous progress in microbial ecology (including microbiology of extreme environments) and environmental biotechnology. It is directly related to the technological and conceptual leap in bioinformatics, which has become one of the most dynamically developing fields of biology. However, in environmental researches, and in particular in environmental microbiology, there is still a lot to be discovered and optimized, especially when analyzing data, coupling them with metadata and developing novel tools for studying microbial biodiversity. In our researches, we focused on genomic analyzes of plasmidomes and metaplasmidomes of extreme environments, identifying genes of an adaptive value and analyzing the range of horizontal gene/plasmid transfer. In addition, thanks to in-depth genomic analysis of psychrotolerant bacteria, we managed to create biological systems that use selected strains as microbial factories for producing various secondary metabolites (dyes, siderophores and surfactants), which then we used for producing novel environmental technologies. An important aspect of our research is also the development of novel tools (including bioinformatic ones) for environmental analyses. We developed a set of novel primers for screening of antibiotic resistance genes; LCPDb-ARG - literature-based, manually-curated database of PCR primers for the monitoring of antibiotic resistance genes in various environments and MAISEN – the system for semiautomatic annotation of bacterial genomes.
